some news from sprit of the 40s
Dear all,

Spirit of the 40s time is coming around again, I really cannot believe it is a year since the very successful events of April 2013, but here I am, another year older and rather greyer......

This email is really just a pre-Christmas 'warning order', to confirm that the event is going ahead again for the 4th year, and that as you all participated last year or have indicated since that you would like to be involved, we would very much like to invite you all back. The event will take place over the weekend of 12/13 April, with the site available for set up early on Friday the 11th as in previous years.

Some of you may be aware that since April 2013, Explosion has transferred across to become part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy. This has resulted in some changes to the way we operate, and I hope you will all bear with us as we adjust to being part of a larger and perhaps more formally structured organisation. I will feed through any changes in more detail as we get into the New Year, but there are two issues which I thought you should all be aware of as soon as possible. Firstly, I am afraid that owing to the more rigorous health and safety and fire risk assessment regime under which we now all have to operate, we cannot offer ANY overnight accommodation inside Museum buildings. I'm sorry if this is disappointing, I know that many of you have taken advantage of this in the past and we have always been really happy to provide it, but my hands are tied here - all of the buildings we used in the past have proved unsuitable for one reason or another, mostly due to the inadequate number of exits or their general condition. We CAN allow camping on site, and we will continue to provide portaloos. Parking provision is completely unaffected, and those of you who are being accommodated elsewhere are welcome to leave your cars on-site over the weekend if you wish. We are also hoping to negotiate a discounted rate at the new Premier Inn which has opened at the end of Heritage Way, five minutes drive from the Museum, and I shall let you all know about that as soon as I can. In the meantime, can you please ensure that this information is passed on to your members and anyone else you think needs to know, as we had one or two misunderstandings about accommodation last year and I am really concerned to ensure that nobody is inconvenienced or disappointed.

Secondly, we are under the microscope regarding the commercial viability of the event once again, and we are going to have to look very closely at how we operate the issue of free tickets to the dance. Essentially, following a recent fire survey we have been explicitly told that we cannot allow more than 200 people in the Grand Magazine, under any circumstances, which rules out the kind of free-and-easy approach we have taken in the past, and every free ticket we issue means a public sale lost. What I hope to do is to re-introduce a heavily discounted ticket for participating re-enactors, set at perhaps 5-6, and it would be good to get a sense of whether you think that is acceptable - I hope you can see that from our end, it's as if we are starting all over again, and we really have to pull out all the stops to show how successful and profitable Sot40s can be. The other option we are exploring is whether we run an entirely separate bar for re-enactors, probably in the Education Centre, to cater for those of you who really just want to relax with a beer after the event and are not that interested in dancing. Again, if you can let me know either you would be interested in that option, please let me know. We could of course provide both of these options.

One last thing - last year we introduced online registration forms for living history groups, vehicle owners and traders. I realise some of you have been coming since 2011, but it helps us out enormously at this end if we have forms to confirm exactly who is coming. If you wouldn't mind gritting your teeth and completing one, it would make mine and Marc's lives immeasurably simpler! They can be found on the Explosion web site http://www.explosion.org.uk/ under the 'Spirit of the 40s' tab at the top of the home page.

That's about it for now. It only remains for me to thank you for supporting Spirit of the 40s for the last three years, and to say that I sincerely hope you will all join us again for what we hope will be the biggest and best Spirit of the 40s ever! And all the team here wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year!

kind regards,

Nick
